A self-professed bookworm, Macau born Steven Tai’s unique blend of intellect and irony presents a refreshingly new take on the woman who stands confidently apart from the mainstream. Steven’s guiding principle in his work and life, has been to learn to celebrate our own awkwardness and revel in the joy of otherness or difference. The Portrait Positive project appealed to his belief that it is the confidence in one’s own unique traits, that makes someone beautiful, even if they are traits not conventionally celebrated as beauty. With a BA in Fashion Design from London’s Central St Martins, Steven worked at design houses including Viktor & Rolf and Stella McCartney before debuting his own label in 2012.

His quirky collection of innovative textiles combined with a celebration of the awkward caught the eye of Yohji Yamamoto, who awarded him the inaugural Chloe award at the 2012 Hyères Festival. Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, he went on to present this collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin where he received international recognition for his self-confident and endearing take on the nerd.

Since then, Steven Tai has continued to amass a strong following – making his mark at New York Fashion Week in September 2013, exhibiting at Vogue Italia’s ‘Vogue Talents’ exhibition in Milan, being a finalist for the prestigious ANDAM Award in 2014 and showcasing SS15 collection in Dubai as part of Vogue’s Fashion Dubai Experience. Since SS17, steventai has been showing his collection in London and Shangahi.

Over the last 4 years, the brand has had shown on-schedule presentations during London Fashion Week, the latest of which, AW18, featured a collaboration with ILMXlab, the team behind the Star Wars films special effects. It was the first ever presentation with both augmented and virtual reality and received critical acclaim from industry insiders and public alike. Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue international and the Guardian all singled out steventai in 2017 as the brand to watch among the top young designers in London.
